The company has also announced a beta of Xen virtualisation support in its Storage Foundation and dynamic multi-pathing technologies. Storage Foundation facilities include the the creation and resizing of storage volumes, while dynamic multi-pathing provides automatic failover in the event of the failure of a component connecting an application to the storage it uses. The open source Xen virtual machine hypervisor has been built into RHEL 5. "For the first time with any server virtualisation platform, this will unite best-in-class storage virtualisation and I/O multi-pathing with virtualised workloads, enabling a standardised, centralised management model across all workloads and all operating systems, physical or virtual," Symantec officials claimed. Symantec and Red Hat have announced they will collaborate on engineering, testing and support efforts. Each vendor's engineers will be able to access the other's testing labs, and tech support staff are being cross-trained. "IT organisations are eager to adopt Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 as an effective platform for driving IT costs out of deploying and managing their infrastructure software," said Scott Crenshaw, vice president of Red Hat Enterprise Solutions. "The rapid availability of Symantec's complete data management solutions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 as well as our collaborative support efforts will help ensure that customers will benefit from their new open source environments as quickly as possible." This news follows Red Hat's announcement of a Cooperative Resolution Center to address customers' problems that cannot be immediately attributed to a particular vendor's software.{moscomment}
