Local managed security services company, Earthwave, has beaten a field of 30 bidders, including major multinationals, to win a prestigious contract to manage the security of the entire NSW Parliamentary network, spanning Parliament House and over 90 electoral offices throughout the state.

Earthwave managing director, Carlo Minassian, told iTWire that the contract had been won initially by an associate, a telecommunications carrier supplier to the Parliament, but had been well beyond its scope, so it had been passed on direct to Earthwave. At this stage, he said, it had been a much smaller project but had grown considerably as Earthwave had become involved and scoped the requirement.

Earthwave operates an indirect channel model with three levels of partnership: associate, premier and Elite, the latter very large systems integrators and outsources who do about $2m of business annually with Earthwave.

The Earthwave solution makes extensive use of security features of Cisco switches and routers. Cisco 800, 1800 and 3600 series Integrated Services Routers, 6500 Catalyst series switches, 4200 series IPS sensors, 5500 series ASA adaptive security appliances, intrusion prevention technology, Cisco virtual private network and firewall technology and the Cisco secure access control server have been deployed. Each of the 96 electoral offices has been fitted with a Cisco ISR. Earthwave is providing a total of 14 managed security services.

"This is a really big deal for Cisco in terms of the security component, and they will be making their own announcement," Minassian said.

He told iTWire that one of Earthwave's key advantages was its ability to integrate logs from more than 200 different network and computing devices, and to provide 24 x7 monitoring with immediate response to any signs that the network is being compromised. He said that other managed security services providers claimed to be able to do this, but many could not. Earthwave relies heavily on Arcsight technology, to integrate these multiple logs, and spends $1.6 million per year on Arcsight licences, Minassian said.

Earthwave also provides managed security services to 70 NSW Government departments and agencies. Minassian said that Earthwave acquired this business as part of a much larger outsourcing contract won by a large systems integrator, announced about 18 months ago. However that company has not yet identified Earthwave's, or any other subcontractors role in the contract, Minassian said.

Earthwave was founded by Minassian and three others in 2000, all ex Cisco or ex IBM GSA. Today it claims over 200 managed services customers among Australia's top 500 companies. Minassian said that many major clients, especially government and finance, were attracted to Earthwave because it retains all customer data onshore in Australia.{moscomment}
