PS3 sales spike up 2500% on Amazon E-mail

We said it would be popular ; it seems the US$100 price cut for the PlayStation 3 in the US has sparked a PS3 comeback.

Sony are now selling North American PS3’s at US$499.99 , US$100 cheaper than last week.

Suddenly the sales seem to be coming for Sony.  Lower the price and they will come.

On the Amazon.com Movers & Shakers screen currently, the 60GB PS3 at the new price is ranked number 1 in Video Game sales (was 26th) with an increase in interest of 2500 percent.

It would seem that the sales valve has been released, all those people patiently waiting for this moment have rushed online to purchase the next generation of the PlayStation brand.

Now that the pricing question has been answered, the next interest will be in whether Sony makes any money from the sales.  Hardware wise Sony lose money on the PS3, now they are losing even more.

Will they make it back in games sales? Current attachment rate is 2.18 games per console sold, slightly above the Nintendo Wii, but down on the 4 or so per Microsoft Xbox 360.   Add to this, that currently there are only a comparatively small  number of compelling titles available to the PS3, the answer is not in the short term.

Maybe the big bucks will come back in the form of Blu-ray movie sales?  Once again the PS3 becomes a cheap alternative for those wanting simply to get into the High Definition movie disc world.
