Google Maps for Mobile offers glimpse of future E-mail

Imagine getting into your car one day with your mobile phone and visiting a web page which can give you directions to practically any place you want to go and, what's more, advise you on the best route based on current traffic conditions. For 30 cities in the US, Google Maps for Mobile does this right now.

In future, the Google Maps for Mobile system could be expanded to cover most major cities around the world.

It's not a GPS navigation system - cellphone triangulation doesn't provide the necessary degree of accuracy. However, Google Maps for Mobiles does provide something else - a real time connection to the real world, with live traffic reporting.

The Google system can even tell you expected driving time based on traffic congestion. And you can also store routes to places that you may sometimes need to visit infrequently.

In the not too distant future, one can imagine merging this sort of system with a GPS unit, combining the best features of real-time traffic tracking and satellite navigation. Until then, however, Google Maps for Mobile will do just fine for most people. {moscomment}
