The technology will effectively turn the aircraft into a flying GSM base station with GPRS support. and, when fully implemented make the Qantas fleet a 'country' for GSM roaming purposes. Customers will need an account with global roaming access to use the service. Qantas group general manager of customer product and services, Ms Lesley Grant, said the airline would evaluate the technology over three-months on a Boeing 767 on Australian domestic routes. Qantas has teamed with Telstra, Panasonic Avionics Corporation and AeroMobile for the evaluation. Grant said that Qantas and its partners were working with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and other agencies to ensure the system operates in accordance with Australian regulatory and legal requirements.
