The company has opened an office in North Sydney, headed by country manager, Audrey Lim. It also houses the company's director of regional operations for ANZ and India, Prem Krithivasan. He told iTWire that Dopod would launch operations in New Zealand in the near future. Dopod International was founded in 2002 and its strategic partner and the manufacturer of its products is Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC), the world's largest PDA manufacturer and the manufacturer of 80 percent of all Windows-based cellphones and PDAs. Dopod is active in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and India. In addition to New Zealand it also plans to launch operations in Russia and the Middle East. Last month Dopod re-branded, unveiling a new corporate logo formed by five circles and three dots "symbolising Dopod's emphasis on brand, technology, product, content and service, and highlight[ing] its customer-centric brand philosophy." The company would seem to be on a collision course with Apple which is attempting to trademark the word 'pod'. Apple has already sent threatening letters to the manufacturer of the Tightpod: a sheath for laptop computers made out of recycled spandex tights . Australian company SmartTrans, whose product is much further removed from an iPod than Dopod's MP3-capable PDAs, has also crossed swords with Apple over its attempt to use the term 'pod'. CEO Tim Herring, told iTWire recently: "We make systems for companies delivering either goods or services to make them more efficient. One of our products is 'SmartTrans e-PoD' (for electronic proof of delivery). We have applied for a trademark for this which Apple is objecting to. We are arguing that 'PoD' has been used for many years as an acronym for proof-of-delivery in the transport industry." {moscomment}
