California-based maker of IP telephony systems has officially opened its South East Asian HQ in Sydney and has confirmed that its previous representative in the region, New Zealand based Connector Systems, will be its initial master distributor. iTWire reported this relationship earlier this month, / but ShoreTel declined to comment on whether it would continue.

ShoreTel's managing director for South East Asia, Tony Warhurst, said the company presently had about a dozen resellers operating through Connector and installations with about 20 customers, between 20 and 30 sties in total. Resellers include Fast Track Communications, Qtech, PureTel, PTS Communications Systems, ITT Communications, Hedloc, Davicom, Online Communications Systems and CCG3 Communications.

Connector will provide first and second level technical support, logistics and product distribution. The ShoreTel office, now two people, will remain small.

The company's flagship regional customer is insolvency firm Ferrier Hodgson which has installed a 130-user ShoreTel system in its Sydney office. Mustafa Mohabbat, IT manager for Ferrier Hodgson, said: "We reviewed the ShoreTel phones and found them to be more functional and easier to use than any other VoIP offerings on the market...We looked at offerings from Avaya and Samsung but ShoreTel won out on value and the company's approach to service."

ShoreTel's IP PBX at present works only with the company's own handsets, using MGCP. Warhurst said support for SIP, which would allow third party handsets to be used, was on the development roadmap. However he said the PBX already supports SIP trunking so companies wishing to use WiFi handsets would be able to incorporate these. He did not believe handset pricing was a major issue saying that retail, single unit prices for ShoreTel handsets ranged from $200 to $560.

The company was launched in 1996 and shipped its first PBXs in 1998. However it entered the handset business only in 2004 because, according to Warhurst, it had determined that handset features and functions were key issues in customer decision making and wanted control over this aspect of its offering.
