Nokia 8 to take on flagship smartphones with high-end specs

According to reputable leaks, Nokia is planning to release the Nokia 8 – its high-end, high specified, dual camera, smartphone to finish the Finnish company’s line-up.

According to Winfuture News (translated) it will come with a 5.3 or 5.7”, 2K 2560 x 1440, bezel-less screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 4/64GB and microSD, a dual Zeiss lens camera and will come in Blue, Steel, Gold/Blue and Gold/Copper.

The phone model HMD Global TA-1004 showed up first on Geekbench on 24 June with the MSM8998 (Qualcomm 835). It is said to cost €598 – that equates to about A$899 inc GST and initial release in Scandinavia is scheduled for 31 July.

HMD Global chief executive Arto Nummela told iTWire at the Australian launch of its value 3, 5 and 6 range that it was considering a flagship but the unit volume is in the value to mid-range.

He added, “People just fell in love with the brand and what it stands for. Its new owner HMD is a start-up that shares the original Nokia passion. It is the people's brand, a trusted brand, and we have to protect that.”

The Zeiss camera was confirmed by the company earlier this month when Nummela said, “Collaborating with ZEISS is an important part of our commitment to always deliver the very best experience for our customers. Our fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging experience that doesn’t just set the standard but redefines it. Our fans expect it and, together with ZEISS, we’re delivering it – co-developed imaging excellence for all.”

A look at Zeiss and Nokia patents appears to favour the stance taken by Apple, LG and Samsung with a wide angle and standard lens sharing an over-sized sensor, rather than Huawei/Leica’s approach of a separate mono and RGB lens and sensors. It also hints at a Xenon flash over single or dual LED flash – a weakness in most smartphone cameras.
