Home Security MailGuard warns about Origin Energy bill scam

Email security vendor MailGuard has warned Australians to beware of an email scam that uses fake bills that appear to be coming from energy company Origin Energy.

MailGuard said in a statement that this was the fourth time since May that Origin Energy had been targeted by scammers.

If the recipient clicks on links in the fake invoices, malicious software gets downloaded to their computers.

MailGuard said the mail was being sent from energy2u.info, a domain that had been registered in Cyprus on Sunday.

It said the mails had started arriving from 8.40am this morning.

The mail itself looks very much like the real thing, with Origin's distinctive branding.

The dollar amount and the due date were being varied in order to avoid spam filters, the company said.
