Mount Gambier expected to see growth due to NBN: claim

The national broadband network is expected to help in the setting up of 700 new businesses and aid in the creation of up to 2370 jobs in Mount Gambier, the company rolling out the network, the NBN Co, claims.

In a statement, NBN Co said the figures were based on a report it had commissioned from the Regional Australia Institute titled Mount Gambier Business Growth Opportunities.

The report was created using research from AlphaBeta's first national economic and social study of the impact of the NBN.

It said that Mount Gambier had a high percentage of professional workers (16%) and knowledge-intensive business services (2.8%) and this was an indication the region would be able to capitalise on digital facilities.

The human capital ranking in Mount Gambier was reported to among the higher figures in South Australia (14 out of 51 local government areas), with 25% having technical qualifications and adult learning at 5%, indicating that the workforce could gain from the provision of fast broadband.

RAI chef executive Jack Archer said: "Mount Gambier has an enormous opportunity to build on traditional industries such as tourism, hospitality and retail services while building on new business opportunities to drive future economic growth.

“In particular, industries that rely on digital capabilities, such as large data transfer requirements and video conferencing will be able to leverage fast broadband to grow and become more competitive beyond the region."
